KEY POINTS:
All but three of the pets featured in the Herald's Adopt Me series featuring Auckland SPCA animals have found new homes. Since the series began on Boxing Day, a supersized white rabbit has been taken in by a family in Mangere Bridge.
And Fluffy, an 11-year-old cat whose owner handed it in after moving overseas, was rehomed.
Of the animals featured before the New Year, those to find homes included a Staffordshire bull terrier cross called Gypsy, as well as an unnamed silver tabby who found a new home with a couple from Devonport, and Bella, the two-year-old tortoiseshell cat.
However, Poppy, an enthusiastic one-year-old border collie cross, was still in need of an owner. Max, a 10-month-old mastiff cross taken from his owner because he was found starving and without shelter, was also still practising his pleading eyes.
SPCA spokesman Craig Montgomery said the SPCA had rehomed 29 dogs and 188 cats since December 23. During the same period, it had taken in 328 cats and 101 dogs.
"It's was a little quiet prior to Christmas and directly after, but this week has been busy, probably because the whole crazy Christmas and New Year period is over," he said.
Mr Montgomery said it was satisfying to see that fewer animals were taken in by the SPCA in December than in previous years. He said it was the only month in the year in which numbers had not increased from the 2005 tally.
