The director of Women's Refuge, Merepeka Raukawa-Tait, is considering standing for mayor of Wellington.
Current mayor Mark Blumsky announced last week he would be stepping down at this year's local body elections to explore other employment opportunities.
Ms Raukawa-Tait said she had thought about running for mayor long before Mr Blumsky's announcement to step down because she said she had a lot of support in Wellington.
She believed she had the relevant experience in local body politics after spending three years on the Bay of Plenty Regional Council in the early 1990s.
"I've also been approached by a number of people asking whether I would stand for Central Government. I have said all along that I would not stand for Central Government and I won't be doing that. But I need to decide where I can take a leadership role in the future."
Ms Raukawa-Tait's contract with Women's Refuge expires next March. She said there was no guarantee her contract would be renewed.
"I was brought in to do a certain job, such as raising the profile and creating financial resources and I have certainly done that. But they (Women's Refuge) may decide someone else should take that further."
If Ms Raukawa-Tait did stand for mayor, it would be as an independent candidate.
"I don't believe party politics has a role in local body politics."
