Young Rathkeale College batsman Andy Oldfield rode his luck in a knock of 167 as he steered his team to a comprehensive win over Red Star in their Umpires Cup Wairarapa senior inter-club cricket match played at Rathkeale College on Saturday.
In what is a record score for a Rathkeale player in the Umpire's Cup limited ?overs competition and possibly in any form of cricket, Oldfield had a catch put down before he was off the mark and was also dropped on two other occasions before he had brought up his half-century.
His fate was symptomatic of what was an atrocious day in the field for Red Star with the number of dropped catches growing to eight before the Rathkeale innings closed at a healthy 270-9
It was a big effort by the students who despite Red Star's catching woes were in strife at 120-7 but who, with Oldfield leading the way, peppered the boundary in the closing overs.Next highest scorer to Oldfield was Ross with 41.
Spearheading the Red Star attack was Nick Moorcock who finished with the impressive figures of 5-40.
Moorcock also did his bit with the bat, scoring 23 as Red Star were dismissed for just 100. Duncan Watts with 3-17, Andy Dodd (3-15) and Simon Clinton-Baker (3-9) shared the wickets for Rathkeale.
The Keinzley Agvet Academy XI had a surprisingly comfortable 78- run win over Wairarapa College.
Batting first Academy scored 214-6 with Jamie Holmwood (60), Ed Hopkins (38), Jamie Hill (30) Will Rist (22) and Thomas Merriman (22 not out) all getting amongst the runs. Seth Rance with 2-40 and D,Jones with 2-53 were the most successful of the Wairarapa College bowlers.
The Wairarapa College reply of 136 saw just the two knocks of any substance with Sam Monaghan making 55 and Cameron Stone 35. Jason Dondertman (2-35) and Craig Aplin (2-29) led the Academy attack.
There were runs aplenty in the Lansdowne v Greytown match at the Pugh Sportsbowl with Lansdowne winning by 17 runs.
Lansdowne batted first and reached 269-5.Ngatai Walker made 73, Henry Cameron 58 and Chris Jefferies 35 while bowling for Greytown Shane Mellor took 2-47
Greytown were all out for 252 with Mark Jonas making 49, Hayden Spierling 45, Josh Doherty 38 and Jacob Ross 32. Spinner Daniel Lenihan finished with 4-35 for Lansdowne.
