Rare motoring gems go under the hammer

Choice range of classic vehicles sure to excite enthusiasts

Motoring enthusiasts around the globe will be watching Shannons' late spring classic auction in Sydney on Monday, with many "world market" classic cars and motorcycles going under the hammer.

Many will follow the auction live and if the trend of the past six months is repeated, as much as a third of all sales will go to online bidders.

The highlights for international enthusiasts include a 1984 Citroen 2CV6 Charleston nicknamed "Tootsie", owned by former Australian touring car champion Dick Johnson, which was formerly the property of British actress Trudie Goodwin, who plays Sergeant June Ackland in The Bill. It's expected to sell for A$15,000-$20,000 ($16,620-$22,160).

Another Aussie treasure, a rare one-owner four-wheel-drive 1976 Holden Overlander Sandman panel van, is expected to make A$32,000-$38,000.

The auction has also created considerable interest with a world-class selection of British, American and Italian motorcycles.

Two-wheel highlights include a circa 1937 Harley Davidson EL Knucklehead V-Twin that has been the subject of a show-winning, ground-up restoration (A$72,000-$80,000).

There is also a selection of collectible British motorcycles including an AJS 7R 350cc single cylinder racing model ($46,000-$54,000) and a similarly rare Velocette KTT MK VIII (A$48,000-$52,000).
