A rare piece of greenstone, worth up to $10,000, was stolen from the Hollyford Valley Camp, Te Anau yesterday.
Constable Alan Johnstone, of Te Anau police, said the 2kg stone, thought to be about the size of a small rugby ball, had been taken from the store , the Southland Times reported.
Mr Johnstone said the greenstone was of a rarer composition found in Poison Bay, Fiordland, and its owner claims it could be worth from $2000 to $10,000.
Inquiries are continuing.
