A rare comet is making its way across New Zealand skies this week, and won't be back for another 110,000 years.
The Panstarrs comet is around 160 million kilometres away from Earth, but is visible to the naked eye.
Carter Observatory astronomer John Field said anyone with a view of the western horizon is in a prime position to view the bright star.
"It's actually at its closest to the sun on Sunday, by which time we're going to start losing it here in our southern night sky, and it'll start appearing in the northern hemisphere."
John Field said it was believed the comet will break up as it gets closer to sun.
