KEY POINTS:
A Pukekohe woman says a man who repeatedly raped her in her home said he wished she was his girlfriend shortly after threatening to kill her.
The woman was giving evidence at the trial in the High Court in Auckland of Roger Tira Kahui, 37, who faces 26 charges in relation to an alleged 4-1/2 hour sex attack in the woman's Pukekohe home on June 13 last year.
Giving evidence in closed court for a second day at the trial with Kahui screened off from her, the woman said she spent most of the ordeal with two pillowcases over her head.
She told of being raped four times, once while being forced to watch a pornographic film, and of being forced into several other sexual acts.
At the end of the sexual ordeal he said he would like them to have a longer relationship.
"He said he wished I was his girlfriend and if I was his girlfriend he would protect me and make sure nothing bad ever happened to me," she said.
"He then said 'but you're not my girlfriend, are you' and I said no."
However, she said his words were somewhat different when he demanded she give him the pin number to her ATM card.
"He said 'if it's not the right number, I am going to kill you'."
The woman said she felt on most occasions during her ordeal that he was going to kill her, even though he said on other occasions that he wouldn't.
She said this fear for her safety meant that on most occasions she did what was asked of her.
"I didn't want to do it," the woman said when asked if she wanted to comply with any sex requests. "I was scared that he would kill me."
She said most of the requests were made calmly but in an authoritative manner and the offender was ordering her, not asking her.
The woman said she was told at the end of the ordeal to make a voice recording into her mobile phone saying she consented to the sexual contact.
"He said 'it won't matter if you go to police because I have got you recorded saying you consented'," the woman told the court.
The phone has never been recovered.
After the sexual ordeal the woman was forced into her car wearing handcuffs the offender found in her bedroom drawers. She told the court of putting running shoes on as she was hatching a plan to escape.
She said they travelled towards an ATM machine in the car and on the way she dropped the cards. On stopping she said she needed to look for the cards and while doing so managed to escape, pulling herself out of a grip the offender had on her hair.
The car pursued her as she ran away but it drove past as she reached a BP service station, from where police were contacted.
Kahui denies four charges of rape, seven of unlawful sexual connection, seven of indecent assault, three of threatening to kill, two of assault and one each of injuring with intent, aggravated burglary and kidnapping.
He is alleged to have forced his way into the woman's home before punching her and then putting her through a prolonged sexual ordeal.
The trial is expected to continue into next week.
