Rapist sentenced to preventive detention

Allan Ivo Greer has been sentenced to preventative detention.

A rapist with 153 previous convictions has been sentenced to preventive detention over a raft of new charges, including one for rape.

At his sentencing in the High Court at Wellington today, Wairarapa man Allan Ivo Greer, 52, frequently interrupted Justice Alan MacKenzie.

Justice MacKenzie sentenced him on one charge of rape, two of aggravated burglary, three of threatening to kill, two for supplying methamphetamine, and one each for possessing an offensive weapon and supplying cannabis.

The court was told Greer's belief system, which included a persecution complex, increased the likelihood he would reoffend.

"You have clearly demonstrated that you regard yourself as a victim of conspiracy, or a series of conspiracies," Justice MacKenzie said.

Greer earlier defended himself at trial.

Greer frequently laughed when the judge described the trauma Greer's offending inflicted on victims.

On the rape charge, Justice MacKenzie sentenced Greer to preventive detention with a minimum jail term of 10 years.

On the burglary charges, he was given seven years' jail.

On the methamphetamine charges Greer was sentenced to three years in jail.

He received a sentence of three months for each of the cannabis and offensive weapon charges.

He must serve the sentences concurrently.
