The wedding of rapist and murderer Liam Reid and disgraced lawyer Davina Murray is official - but the happy couple will have to wait 23 years before seeing any photos of the ceremony.

The couple married on June 27 at Auckland Prison where Reid is serving a life sentence and preventive detention.

The Herald has today obtained their marriage certificate, which confirms the nuptials happened at the chapel within New Zealand's toughest prison.

The certificate states neither she nor Reid have been married previously.

And it reveals Murray is living at an address north of Auckland.

The property is owned by a company connected to Barry Hart, another disgraced lawyer.

Hart was a prominent Auckland defence lawyer until 2012 when he was struck off by the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Tribunal after he was found guilty on three charges, which related to not paying a private investigator for services, obstructing the lawyers disciplinary process by refusing to disclose a file relating to a former client, and gross overcharging.

Reid was jailed for raping and killing deaf woman Emma Agnew in Christchurch in 2007, as well as the rape, attempted murder and robbery of a 21-year-old student in Dunedin nine days later.

Murray was a budding Auckland defence lawyer, but lost her legal career after smuggling an iPhone, cigarettes and a lighter to her client Reid in 2011 while he was in Mt Eden prison.

The ceremony, in front of one guest, took place at 10am and afterwards the bride and groom enjoyed a specially catered morning tea, had photos taken and completed the legal paperwork to seal their marriage.

The photographs were taken by a Department of Corrections staffer and the Herald has been declined access to those.

It is understood the photos may not be released to Reid and his bride until after his release.

Reid must serve 23 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.

Due to his preventive detention sentenced though, he may never be freed.

Preventive detention is an indefinite sentence and release can only be approved by the Parole Board.

The Herald revealed that Reid married Murray on his daughter's birthday, upsetting the young woman and her mother.

It is not illegal for inmates to get married in New Zealand prisons.

They must apply and it is up to the prison director to approve or decline.

Catering must be paid for by the inmate, photos are a usual part of the process but handled by Corrections and there are no conjugal visits for inmates.
