A mother told a court today how she found her 14-year-old daughter stripped naked and unconscious behind the fence of their south Auckland home.
David Mamea, 18, is on trial charged with attempted murder, rape and being party to rape.
Mamea has pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated burglary but denies the three other charges.
The mother, speaking through a Vietnamese interpreter, told the High Court at Auckland she heard faint cries from her daughter when she returned home at 4am after visiting family friends for an hour on December 31, 2004.
"I heard her say: 'Mummy, there were burglars'."
The daughter, now 15, is the eldest of five children who all lived at the time in Manurewa after migrating to New Zealand from Vietnam two years earlier.
The mother said she ran around the house to the reserve at the back of their property and found her daughter all wet, unconscious and stripped naked apart from a top that had been pulled up above her chest.
"I couldn't see her face, I saw her top was pushed right up and I could see her white legs.
"I pulled her up and held her to me but I couldn't pick her up."
The mother was in tears throughout giving evidence and at times became too distressed to speak.
She said her husband took their daughter back inside and she called family and emergency services.
Her daughter spent a week in hospital recovering from 10 stab wounds, bites and rape.
Crown prosecutor Steven Haszard said police found semen from another attacker but they have been unable to find him.
The daughter gave evidence yesterday and her father is expected to take the witness box today.
The five-day trial is before Justice Graham Lang.
