A number of players from the South Canterbury Rugby team are facing allegations of rape, police say.
A statement today from Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Forlong of Wanganui police said about 15 officers in Wanganui, Palmerston North and Timaru were working on an investigation involving the alleged rape of a young woman in Wanganui on Sunday.
The South Canterbury Rugby team were staying in the city at the time.
"I can confirm that the rape allegations have been brought against a number of players from the South Canterbury Rugby Team who were staying at the Kingsgate Hotel in Whanganui,'' Mr Forlong said.
"South Canterbury Rugby are fully cooperating and assisting us with our investigation. We have taken a number of statements from the team but we still have a large number of people to speak to,'' he said.
