Why is the human voice no longer deemed adequate to convey information? Even National Radio's formerly dignified Morning Report has its headlines and promos for later programmes accompanied, and sometimes obscured, by an amorphous assortment of hoots, wails, drumming, rattling, tinkling, and twanging.

My husband said he felt strange while driving on State Highway 1 just past Huntly on Friday, August 7, and a few seconds later passed out. Luckily, he had pulled over. In a panic, I stood on the road and waved at the cars and two lots of people stopped. I would like to thank two wonderful young women who phoned the ambulance and who were so kind and helpful, and then a guy from the power board who took all my husband's medical details and later helped me get sorted to drive the car to Hamilton as I had never driven our four-wheel-drive before. Lastly, the ambulance people were absolutely wonderful to my husband and me. You were all so amazing. I never got your names, so I hope you read this. Thank you so much.

The traffic-light sequence, which is frequently changed from ideally 23 seconds to allow Ascot Ave traffic to flow well to Green Lane East and to either the Greenlane roundabout or to the Southern Motorway on- ramp, was down to a mere 8 secs the other morning at 7.20, so allowing only three or four cars through. The result was very frustrated drivers and very risky driving. One motorist drove down the right side lane, narrowly avoiding a head-on crash. In contrast, Green Lane East lights ran for 43secs.

I found myself at North Shore Hospital last night waiting for a cat scan. There were a lot of other patients and it seemed we were in for a long wait. One lovely young girl, who was also a waiting patient, ordered pizzas for us and offered them to the staff as well. A huge thank-you. I didn't get your name and thanked you but you need to know how much it was appreciated. I will "pay it forward" when I get the chance.
