The lack of pedestrian crossings and safety measures for people on foot in Auckland is appalling. People should be able to cross the road safely to catch a bus or go to a supermarket, without risking their lives. In many places where you can't have a pedestrian crossing, because, horror of horrors, it would slow traffic, there should be pedestrian safety islands in the middle of road. The islands would not affect the flow of traffic. If there were proper safety measures for pedestrians, more people would walk instead of taking cars. Why can't planners come up with simple safety measures?

The Te Hihi School, Karaka. My granddaughter lost her mother suddenly. Incredibly, the 10-year-old wanted to go to school the next day, attempting to make her life as "normal" as possible. School staff ran with that phrase, explaining to the child each morning for a week how the day would be managed. The other children, too, helped to make each day as "normal" as possible. An amazing effort.

The dirty inconsiderate smokers who, not wanting to pollute their own car, are quite happy to pollute the city by throwing their cigarette butts out of the car window.

I would like to pass on my huge thanks to the group of kind young people who stopped near Matapouri on Tuesday night. I had just experienced a horrific car accident, was by myself, in the middle of nowhere, and it was raining. They made me feel a lot safer in a crisis. Thank you!
