What are we teaching our young people about courtesy, when so many companies refuse to show any to our young ones. Case in point: a "trendy chicken takeout"- recently opened in Takapuna - couldn't even be bothered contacting the young job applicants they interviewed, to let them know they had been unsuccessful. One such young applicant - my daughter - emailed them twice, very politely asking if the job was still available. No answer. I expressed disgust at this and she shrugged, "That's just the way it is these days." What a sad indictment of our times.

My son had his tennis match last Saturday at Mt Albert Grammar School tennis grounds and left behind his winter jacket. I contacted MAGS' sports director and also rang the sports department co-ordinator. Guess what? I had my son's jacket back today, two days later. A big thanks to these two people and also to whoever who had picked up and kindly handed in the jacket, which is of great sentimental value to my son.

Re the annual delivery of yellow and white pages phone directories for the Auckland region and local area to every street address. Most people now use online sources to find contact information and don't need these print versions that clutter up their homes and increase their carbon footprint. They should be delivered only to consumers who request to receive them.

I was privileged to accompany a patient to the Race for Life Track Day at Hampton Downs race track. The many volunteers and sponsors of this day did a wonderful job in ensuring everyone's comfort and safety and it was a joy to behold the happy faces of patients who challenged themselves to go on rides in a helicopter, on Harley Davidson motorcycles, racing cars, classic cars and big trucks. Everyone was also treated to a superb lunch and felt really well looked after. So to Viv with her vision, initiative and drive and all the people who got behind her donating their time and their vehicles for this amazing day, congratulations and humble thanks.
