I got rejected from a bus service for having a $20 note. The driver had no change to give me, which is fair enough. Hop cards are the way to go and unfortunately for me I lost my card the other day. But there was no need for the driver to be rude and raise her voice. It was an unnecessary embarrassment I didn't need in the morning.

To the three firemen from Remuera Fire Station a huge thank you for replacing my smoke alarms. You were friendly, helpful and very efficient. A wonderful service.

A quick response to Ron: I'm with Rosemary. For years I couldn't figure out how to dial the name after the 0800, because there are multiple letters for each number key on a phone, so how do you select the right letter? When texting one presses the key multiple times to get the required letter (for non-smart mobiles), but this doesn't work when making a phone call. I asked many people but no one could tell me. I've finally found out, though haven't tried it, that as long as the desired letter is one of those associated with a key, you only need to press the key once. Yes, simple, but only if you know how. I suspect most people seeing those 0800 call names don't know how to dial them.

A big shout-out to the folks at the Refuse and Recycling Centre in Hamilton. What a pleasure it was to see the tight operation they run there, offering reused goods for sale at a good price. We purchased a lawnmower which was given the once-over before selling - it goes like a charm. From a Kiwi who has just returned home, it's wonderful to see common sense at its finest.

I'm worried about the number of "homeless" in the Auckland CBD. Last night at Britomart I walked past a group of teenagers sitting with a cap for money. But one had a Kathmandu jacket! I don't own one. Are they homeless or looking for easy cash?
