KEY POINTS:
Audi is poised to introduce the spiritual successor to the 2.2-litre five-cylinder engine that powered the giant-killing Quattro rally cars of 25 years ago.
Word from Germany is that Audi will equip its TT RS flagship with an all-new twincharged inline-five engine, reviving memories of the first machine to wear the revered Quattro badge.
A letter from Audi's HQ to the carmakers's dealerships in Germany confirming the details about the hottest-ever TT found its way into the German press.
It said that the RS will be powered by a 2.5-litre direct-injection unit, developing 250kW (335bhp) and 450Nm of torque with the aid of a supercharger and turbocharger.
The RS is expected to sprint from zero to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds and on to a governed top speed of 250km/h.
Audi also highlighted the two-door's fuel economy, claiming it would return 10 litres/100km (28mpg) on the combined town and around cycle.
The newcomer also gets Audi's quattro four-wheel drive, with 40:60 bias in favour of the rear wheels and a six-speed manual gearbox as standard.
It will look the part, too, with an aggressive bodykit as standard.
Sales of both the coupe and convertible versions will kick off around July next year.
