More than 40 people marched from Aotea Square to Auckland Council headquarters in Albert St in a Rates "Rip-Off" Rally protest at Aucklanders receiving the first instalments of an average 9.9 per cent rates rise.
After marching to a chant "Rates are high, his name is Lenny, at this rate we won't have a penny," protesters heard mayoral candidate Stephen Berry put his plan for zero-rates increases above the level of inflation.
"Arresting rates growth requires discipline and a genuine commitment to only funding those core services required by the Local Government Act such as footpaths, parks and waste collection," said Mr Berry.
Rally co organiser and mayoral candidate Penny Bright said her track record stood for an "open, transparent and democraticaly accountable Auckland."
