KEY POINTS:
The MetService has issued a severe weather watch for the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and Westland Ranges.
It said heavy rain falls were likely in the northeast of the North Island today, with heaviest falls in the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel Ranges.
MetService said it was uncertain if total rainfall would reach warning criteria.
The area considered to receive the highest rainfall is the Eastern Bay of Plenty Ranges, it said.
A low is also expected to cross the southern part of the South Island this evening, accompanied by a spell of heavy rain in the Westland Ranges until Monday morning.
The MetService has warned that if sustained heavy rain does eventuate, streams and rivers could rise rapidly.
People are urged to keep up with the latest forecasts.
