A deep, slow moving low northeast of New Zealand is directing strong moist southeasterlies across the northern and central North Island, the forecaster says.
Rain should continue over Gisborne and Hawkes Bay throughout today, then gradually ease Thursday. The heaviest falls are expected near the Hawkes Bay ranges north of Napier where up to 200mm may fall.
About 150mm of rain is possible about the Hawkes Bay ranges south of Napier, and for the coastal hills and ranges of Gisborne. Significant falls are also likely for lower lying coastal areas, where about 60 to 90mm may fall.
People are advised that rivers and streams are likely to rise rapidly, and there will probably be slips and surface flooding.
An early warning issued by MetService for severe southeast gales in northern Gisborne, eastern Bay of Plenty, and exposed coasts from Coromandel Peninsula to Northland, has now been lifted.
