A severe weather warning has been issued for the Hawkes Bay and Gisborne Ranges after 36 hours of rain this morning.
MetService forecaster Gerard Barrow said a slow moving front embedded in a moist southerly flow was bringing the wet weather.
He said a further 50mls could be expected by 2pm.
Mr Barrow said the rain was set to ease this afternoon but trampers in the area should watch for rapidly rising rivers and streams.
