Police and emergency services are being kept busy and motorists have had their travel plans disrupted after rain drenched parts of the lower North Island overnight.
The Wellington region was hit particularly hard with rain causing slips and road closures.
Wellington Police Inspector Mal Schwartfeger said police had been kept busy overnight and this morning with the downpour of water causing callouts to slips and flooding.
Mr Schwartfeger advised motorists to take care when driving and to expect delays in some areas.
Flooding had closed Greys Road in Kapiti and Block Road in Lower Hutt.
Paikakariki Road has been closed due to a slip and Akatarawa Road between Upper Hutt and Kapiti was closed with a tree down over the lanes.
A Wellington Fire communications spokesperson said there had been reports of flooding through houses and garages in Paraparamu, north of Wellington and Stratford, in Taranaki.
Wellington Regional Council spokesman Andrew Cutler said he had not been advised of any threat of rising water levels but the situation was being monitored.
The wet rain comes hard on the heels of a massive clean-up operation this week after wild weather caused chaos across the South Island and the lower North Island.
A man was killed in North Canterbury, roads were closed, trees and powerlines were felled and rivers swelled as high winds and heavy rain left a path of destruction in Wellington and parts of Canterbury.
