KEY POINTS:
Much-needed rain is forecast for the South Island's hydro lakes, which are at around half their average capacity.
Radio Network head weather analyst Philip Duncan said heavy showers were expected on the South Island's alpine regions on Thursday afternoon, as a cold front stalled over the region.
He said there would be heavy rain overnight on Thursday, which would ease on Friday morning, but several days of showers and snow would follow from Sunday.
Mr Duncan said it would not be enough to end any power fears, but would help maintain or even slightly raise lake levels.
An electricity industry power saving awareness programme is due to begin on Sunday.
