MetService has issued a severe weather warning for Westland and Fiordland as a front approaches the South Island from the Tasman Sea.
The front is expected to reach Fiordland overnight and Westland tomorrow.
MetService said it would be preceded by a moist northerly flow, bringing heavy rain to Fiordland and Westland south of the glaciers.
Up to 140mm of rain is expected in the region from this evening through to tomorrow evening, with further rain likely Wednesday afternoon and evening.
MetService warned that rivers and streams were likely to rise quickly, and slips were possible.
