KEY POINTS:
Rain was continuing to batter the lower South Island this morning with residents being warned to watch for swollen rivers and streams.
Moderate or heavy rain is falling over much of Westland.
The MetService said that in the 22 hours from 8am today to 6am tomorrow 80-120mm of rain was expected in the ranges, and 30-50mm near the coast.
The heaviest falls were expected this afternoon when thunderstorms were possible.
The rain is expected to ease in south Westland around midnight and further north by dawn tomorrow.
