KEY POINTS:
A railway worker is believed to have been hit by a train and killed in the Waikato this morning.
Inspector Matt Sillars of the police northern communications centre said police had stopped the train while an investigation was launched after the accident at 11.08am today.
Ontrack spokesman Kevin Ramshaw confirmed a man was killed at Ohinewai, north of Huntly.
The accident occurred on a work site but little more was known, he said.
The man's next of kin were yet to be identified.
Police, Land Transport New Zealand, the Transport Accident Investigation Commission and the Department of Labour had been informed and were investigating. Mr Ramshaw described the accident as a tragedy.
