The North Island's main train line has re-opened after a freight train derailment set a wagon on fire today.
The train was heading from Auckland to Wellington when, at about 4.15am, it came off the track just short of the north Manawatu station at Hunterville.
Sparks from the derailment ignited the contents of one wagon and the flames damaged overhead wires.
The track was cleared and repaired by 2pm but could only be opened to diesel trains as the wires would not be fixed until later in the afternoon.
KiwiRail said four freight services had been delayed and were now back on the move.
The cause of the derailment was under investigation.
