KEY POINTS:
A man who featured on the front page of the Herald in photographs that showed a terrifying aggravated robbery of a St Lukes dairy has handed himself in to police.
The man is one of two people who now face charges relating to the aggravated robbery of the Rose Cottage Superette last Monday.
Security camera footage of the robbery, in which the female owner of the diary was threatened with a shotgun, ran on the front page of the Herald last Wednesday. In the first of three images, a man with camouflage paint on his face and material tied around his head is seen pointing the gun across the counter. In the next two photographs he is seen leaping across the counter to where the dairy owner is standing.
This week, an unemployed 38-year-old man was arrested in connection with the crime after handing himself in to police following the publicity.
A second man, a 19-year-old labourer, has also been arrested. Both men face charges of aggravated robbery as well as arson of a getaway car.
That car was stolen during a home invasion at Pt Chevalier on June 3 and the two men are also facing charges in connection with that incident. A third person is also being sought.
Detective Brendan Gregan of the Avondale CIB said the arrests followed publicity of the surveillance footage in the media and were a reminder of how good security systems could help police following a crime.
"The footage was of very good quality and reinforces the advice we give shopkeepers and store owners - using up-to-date equipment to help protect your property helps us to catch offenders should you become victims of crime."
