Human clones and extra-terrestrials are more than a sci-fi movie for some New Zealanders - they've become reality.
The Raelians, a religious group who believe humans were created by space travellers, is gaining followers in New Zealand after claiming that two human babies have been cloned.
The movement, which claims 60,000 members in 84 countries, say the cloning has prompted new interest in this country.
Mark Woodgate, a New Zealand representative for the sect, said he had been inundated with media, critics and supporters.
The Hamilton fitness trainer said the Raelians were about to launch a campaign informing Maori about religion before European settlers arrived in New Zealand.
The Raelians believe Maori legends refer to gods (known as Elohim) coming from the sky - giving weight to their belief that extra-terrestrials used genetic engineering to create life on Earth 25,000 years ago.
The Raelians have about 100 New Zealand members.
He says results of tests, expected soon, are expected to verify the cloning claims.
"There could be many infertile New Zealand couples out there who want to try this technology," Mr Woodgate said.
Raelians believe genetic engineering could lead to immortal life.
