A car that hit a 12-year-old boy south of Taupo on New Year's Eve was apparently speeding but not racing, the police say.
Mani Wall, of Waitahanui, died while crossing on SH1 with three friends after a swim in Lake Taupo.
Police have appealed for witnesses who may have noticed two cars travelling close together.
"They were not racing as in boyracer style," said Sergeant Dave Fraser.
The car that hit Mani, driven by a 20- year-old man, had its front and rear windscreens smashed and panel damage down its right side.
Both cars were impounded.
Mr Fraser said it was too early to say whether charges would be laid.
Racing ruled out
