Racing possible cause of crash

A Mazda station wagon carrying eight young people smashed into a power pole in the Auckland suburb of Bayswater last night.

The 16-year-old driver is in a critical condition in hospital.

It is believed speed was a factor in the crash and police are looking into the possibility the car was racing with another.

One local resident said she heard speeding cars before the sirens. She said Bayswater Avenue, where the crash occurred, is regularly used for racing.
