KEY POINTS:
Talk about putting the boot in - Suzuki New Zealand has launched a sedan version of its successful SX4 hatchback, bringing the number variants in the model line to a bewildering 11.
The three-box SX4 is 355mm longer than the hatchback, adding a significant element of practicality.
The company claims the SX4 sedan's 515-litre boot is larger than the loadspace offered by the Ford Falcon.
It's also 15 per cent more rigid than the five-door, which helps refinement and handling.
However, the extra load-carrying ability and strength comes at considerable cost to styling.
Designed primarily for conservative sedan-focused markets, such as the US - the car was launched at last year's New York Auto Show - the SX4 four-door ditches the appealing quirky appearance of the hatchback for a distinctly dumpy look.
The cab-forward look of the A-pillar, which is carried over from the hatch - including the MPV-like quarter window - is an uneasy match with the thick, rear pillars and high bootline.
Nor do the tiny 15-inch alloy wheels (smaller than those on the hatchback) do the car any styling favours.
The sedan is offered only in top 2.0-litre Limited specification, at exactly the same prices as the equivalent hatch, which are $24,500 for the five-speed manual and $25,990 for the four-stage automatic version.
Standard equipment includes a full exterior body kit, keyless entry/start and climate-controlled air conditioning.
