A quick-thinking police officer and a smart phone app saved the life of a woman suffering a heart attack in Nelson.
The woman went into cardiac arrest at the Stoke tennis courts on Wednesday evening.
Police officers responding to a call for help saw the woman needed urgent treatment and started CPR, said Nelson Bays area commander Inspector Mat Arnold-Kelly.
"They used an app on their smartphones to locate the nearest defibrillator, which was at a local supermarket. Thankfully they were able to get the defibrillator and successfully re-started the woman's heart," he said.
"We know time is of the essence in these situations and being able to quickly source this specialist equipment really is a life saver."
