'Quick and courageous' couple nab burglars

A quick-thinking couple have helped round up two burglars they happened to catch red-handed.

The couple were driving past a rural address in Opotiki on January 10 when they heard a house alarm.

Realising it had been set off by burglars, they stopped at the property and blocked the exit with their car, police said today.

However, the offenders knocked the couple's car out of the way and sped away.

Refusing to gave up, the couple chased the burglars in their car and got their number plate, which police used to identify the offenders.

One of them was found a short time later and a second had since been identified. Both had been charged with burglary.

Police also searched an address in Waiotahi and found property stolen from the house, along with a cannabis plot.

Police thanked the couple for their "quick and courageous actions''.

Two men were to appear in Opotiki District Court on Monday.
