The teenage son of a former champion athlete and outspoken Auckland councillor has been hurt in a crash less than a year after he drove into a house.
The smash involving Dick Quax's son, Jacob, occurred on the Southeastern Motorway about 8am on Tuesday.
"It was like a bomb exploded in the back of the car. I got a hell of a fright," said an Auckland woman who was driving her Mazda Familia to work in Penrose.
"I'm thinking: 'Oh my God, I've killed somebody'."
The woman, who asked not to be named, said she sustained whiplash. She said ambulance staff checked Quax for hip and pelvis injuries and he was taken to Middlemore Hospital.
