KEY POINTS:
Two small earthquakes within 16 minutes rattled the Whakatane region last night.
The first, measuring 3.7, struck at 7.19pm. It was centred 10km north of Whakatane at a depth of 5km, GNS Science reported.
A second quake, measuring 3.8, struck at the same place at 7.35pm.
