Power has been restored to Christchurch homes following two strong aftershocks this morning.
A 4.1 quake struck at 6am and was centred 10km south east of the city, near Ferrymead, at a depth of 7km.
The quake came within half an hour of a magnitude 3.3 quake at the same location and depth at 5.32am.
GNS Science said the second quake was felt in the Christchurch region, with reports it was strongly felt in Bexley, Dallington, Mount Pleasant and Huntsbury.
Orion's Heathcote substation shut down following the 4.1 quake, cutting power to Heathcote, Woolston and parts of the eastern hill suburbs.
The company said power was restored to affected customers by 6.30am.
