An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook the Westport area early this morning.
The centre of the earthquake, at 12.20am, was 30km south of the West Coast town at a depth of 7km, Geological and Nuclear Sciences said in a statement.
A second earthquake was reported between Greytown and Martinborough area at 6.41am, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale. It was felt in Masterton. A similar quake was reported in the area yesterday.
