A moderate earthquake rolled through Southland over night, and was felt as far north as Auckland.
GeoNet recorded the earthquake as magnitude 5.5 and centred 78 kilometres deep 10 kilometres west of Te Anau.
The earthquake struck at 12:40am.
More than a thousand reports were logged on the GeoNet website of people feeling the earthquake. Most reported were from the South Island in Southland, Otago and Canterbury.
However one person in Auckland and two in Waikato claimed to have felt the quake.
