Three small earthquakes hit Canterbury this morning, followed by a 3.6 magnitude quake in Wellington.
The jolt struck at 10.42am, 20km north-west of Wellington, at a depth of 30km, GNS Science reported.
It came nine minutes after a 3.7 magnitude aftershock, 12km deep, struck 10km north-east of Christchurch.
Canterbury was also hit by a 3.1 magnitude quake 20km west of Christchurch at a depth of 9km at 6.56am and a 3.6 quake 10km south-east of Darfield at a depth of 11km at 12.28am.
