The Turangi and Taupo region was shaken by two earthquakes overnight.
The first, at 1.01am, had a magnitude of 4.3 and was centred 10km north-west of Turangi at a depth of 3km.
The second, at 5.21am, was centred in the same area at a depth of 5km and measured 4.4.
GNS Science said both would have been widely felt.
