KEY POINTS:
Earthquakes have shaken the country overnight, with one felt in Whakatane and Opotoki and another rocking Canterbury.
The Eastern Bay of Plenty quake happened at 10.06pm and measured 4.2 on the Richter scale. GNS Science said it was 30km south of Whakatane at a depth of 30km.
In Canterbury this morning, a 4.1 quake occurred at 5.20am, 20km south of Hanmer Springs. It was at a depth of 15km, and GNS scientists said it would have been felt quite sharply in North Canterbury.
