KEY POINTS:
Earthquakes struck the Kermadec Islands, north of New Zealand, and parts of inland Canterbury this morning.
A 5.8-magnitude earthquake centred 154km southwest of Raoul Island struck at 7.29am at a depth of 35km, the US Geological Survey said.
Another quake, measuring 4 on the Richter scale and centred 20km southwest of Twizel, was recorded at a depth of 5km at 3.15am.
