KEY POINTS:
Two earthquakes were felt in the South Island between 6.30am and 8am this morning.
The first, measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale, struck Canterbury at 6.47am.
The quake, centred 10km north east of Hanmer Springs at a depth of 7km, was probably felt in the town, GNS Science said.
A second quake was felt throughout Fiordland and western Southland just after 7.40am.
Measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, it was centred 80km northwest of Te Anau at a depth of 20km.
