An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook the central North Island just before 11.30pm on Saturday night.
GNS Science said the quake, centred 40km north of Napier, was at a depth of 30km, and was felt widely in the Hawkes Bay and central North Island.
A moderate earthquake shook the Milford Sound area yesterday.
The quake measured 4.4 on the Richter scale and happened at 10am, 20km northwest of Milford Sound at a depth of 10km.
On Thursday, a 4.7 quake jolted the same region. That quake was centred 70km northwest of Te Anau at a depth of 12km.
