A quake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck off Te Araroa, on the tip of the East Cape, this morning.
The quake hit at 5.24am and was centred 140km deep, 200km northeast of Te Araroa.
It would possibly have been felt in the northeast of the North Island, GNS Sceience said.
