Parts of Wellington railway station may require earthquake strengthening.
KiwiRail chief executive Jim Quinn said engineering advice was the station was likely to be above the minimum 34 per cent of building standard.
However, a more detailed investigation would show whether action was needed on three areas: the internal office stairs, the main atrium concourse and the building's facade.
Mr Quinn said engineers were looking at the risks and how they could be addressed.
"This building is a Wellington landmark and a rich piece of our history. The safety of those who occupy and use it is our top priority," Mr Quinn said.
