An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale has struck off the Kapiti Coast and has been widely felt in the Wellington, Kapiti Coast and southern Taranaki areas.
The quake hit at 11.09am about 30km north-west of Otaki and had a focal depth of 50km.
GNS duty seismologist Warwick Smith said the quake was widely felt in the Kapiti region because of the soft sandy ground.
He said it may have damaged ornaments in people's homes but there are no reports of major damage.
Mr Smith said it is not uncommon for an earthquake of this magnitude to hit the Kapiti Coast.
The quake had been reported by over 400 homes and businesses on the GNS website by 11.30am. It was reported as far north as New Plymouth and as far south as Blenheim.
