The lower North Island was shaken by an earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale just before noon yesterday.
The quake, centred 30km northeast of Dannevirke at a depth of 20km, struck at 11.48am and was felt throughout northern Wairarapa and Manawatu.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
