An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter Scale hit near Te Anau this morning.
The quake, at 6.33am, was felt in Fiordland, GNS Science said.
It was centred 110km west of Te Anau, at a depth of 12km.
The quake follows a series of aftershocks in the area following a 7.8 earthquake - the biggest in the world this year - in Fiordland last month.
