Parts of the Bay of Plenty received a shake early this morning with a quake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale.
The earth quake had a focal depth of 5km and struck 10km north of Matata.
According to a report on the GeoNet website, the quake was strongly felt in Whakatane and had been reported by 27 people.
